Remember the old movies where the heroine sweeps down an elegant staircase, pausing dramatically on the landing for all to admire her?  Not many of us have the space to have that kind of staircase in our homes.  If you have a second story or a basement, however, you can still have an elegant staircase through the use of custom stiles, banisters, and other parts.

Custom posts add a nice touch while holding up the banister and keeping small children from falling off the staircase. These were turned for a private home and featured post-to-post connections with each newel extending below skirt with cap and finial as shown. T

Good Millwork provides free CAD files for our over 10,000 molding profiles.  We will take your drawing and create a CAD file for you.  Some of you nod and download a file for your work.  Others of you are asking, “What is a CAD file?”

CAD stands for Computer Assisted Design.  It is basically a program that lets you draw designs on the computer.  A CAD file is the resulting file, much like a doc file results from typing words into Word.

Ideally, a CAD drawing not only shows the item drawn, but the material it is to be made from, as well as other notes that tell the user what they need to know to create the item drawn.  Architects use these files to draw plans for buildings.  Usually, a building will have a large number of CAD files, each addressing a different part of the building.

For example, there would be a file with the plans on a sort of overview level, with where the walls are, how long and tall the walls would be, and that sort of thing.  Then there would be detail files that contain the profiles for the trim along the top and bottom of the walls, any panels on the walls, and where the electrical outlets would be.  A building can have hundreds of pages of documents specifying each detail for every room in the building.

Drawing the plans, even with a computer to help, is a very labor intensive process.  It might take two to six months to draw the plans for a horse barn, for example.  Any thing that can help the architect finish the plan faster means the client gets their plans faster and the architect can move on to the next phase of the project.

Because we understand the labor intensive process that architects go through to design a building, we at Good Millwork offer free CAD files of our moldings.  A simple download can save hours of work.  Feel free to download all the CAD files you need.

When you are ready to begin building, we can provide the wood for that, as well.  While the wood isn’t free, it is hassle free.  Give us a call today and see.
