Many people think that molding is just a piece of wood where the wall meets the ceiling. This is incorrect. Moldings can be used in many ways throughout the room to add accents and elegance. This window, for example, would not look nearly as elegant if it were simply a pane of glass in the wall.

This window brings to mind the Rose Window in the Mission San Jose, San Antonio, Texas. This window was sculpted from stone around 1775 for the Mission. Legend has it that Juan Huizar carved it and named it after his bethrothed, Rosa. The full name for the window is La Ventana de Rosa, the window of Rosa.

Rose Window, Mission San Jose, San Antonio, Texas

Still considered one of the finest examples of baroque architecture in North America, it has been carefully preserved. Although the Mission is part of the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park, it is still an active parish. The Catholic Church maintains the church building while the National Park Service maintains the rest of the property. Visitors are welcome to the Mass on Sunday.

It must have taken a long time to carve this monumental work in granite, particularly with the hand tools available in 1775. However, Good Millwork has a much faster turn around time than the Spanish carver could manage. If what you order is one of the 10,000 molding profiles we have in our database, you can have your order in 5-7 days. Custom molding orders take a little longer. We will, in any case, beat Huizar’s turn around time. Give us a call and see.
