Medieval re-enactment is especially popular in Europe. Groups generally focus on one narrow time period and re-enact battles and other events from the time. Tournaments on horseback are popular. In Britain, many re-enactments are held on or near actual historical sites.
The Society for Creative Anachronism is also heavily involved in Medieval re-enactment. Their events can be very authentic, but they also like to hide modern conveniences like ice chests in a historical guise.
Costumes from the Middle Ages can be very colorful and elaborate, but if you are playing a poor character, a very simple costume is all that is needed. For wealthy characters, silks, satins, and velvets are great, as well as practical broadcloth. Broadcloth is very versatile for poorer character’s costumes as well.
